John Lang
Hilton of Carslogie, 240 hectares
West Side of Cupar in Fife
John has been farming at Hilton of Carslogie both before and after university and travelling. Since becoming dissatisfied with the margins on seed potatoes, John switched to ware and joined Branston in 2000. Today, about a sixth of the 240-hectare family farm is dedicated to potato production with additional land rented as required.
“I was always interested in running the family farm. There are very few other careers that potentially offer such opportunities as farming, particularly in relation to being your own boss and making your own decisions about areas to invest when you can see that they have potential.
“Branston has always realised the importance of communicating with its growers. The people I deal with understand and appreciate my situation, and will hopefully continue to keep a firm grasp of the fact that growers need sufficient returns to allow for re-investment.”
“Over the last few years times have been challenging. Looking ahead, with the population increasing and food always needed, I think we can be optimistic. British farmers can produce food to high standards and there is an increasing demand for such quality.”
