Linked to the curriculum for primary schools, Grow Your Own Potatoes (GYOP) is an annual competition that challenges primary schools to grow as many potatoes as they can. It's been growing in popularity and this year 13,000 schools have registered to take part.
The children have two different varieties to grow - Rocket for the main competition and a second variety provided by seed potato companies across the UK. We're providing some of our delicious Piccolo Star variety for schools across the South West region.
We'll also be helping out by offering local primary schools additional seed potatoes and support so that more children can gain firsthand experience of potato growing. In recent years our 'potato people' have visited a number of schools in Lincolnshire, Scotland and the South West and showed the children how to plant, grow and harvest their potatoes.
