Branston threw open the doors of its Ilminster site to the families and friends of its employees. 70 people attended the open days and were treated to a tour of the site and a talk about how Branston prepares and packs its spuds - which are delivered to shops and supermarkets across the country.

There were lots of fun activities for the family. There was face painting and a Mr Potato Head colouring competition, as well as a chance to take part in a quiz about Branston and another competition to guess the number of potatoes in a sack.

Ian Wait, general manager at the Ilminster site, said: "The idea for the family and friends open day came about a few months ago, when I took my own kids to visit the site. They really enjoyed seeing where I work and how we process and package the potatoes that they see in the shops.

"The open day at the weekend was a real success. We have 135 employees here in Ilminster and the number of people who attended the event shows that there is a real interest in what we do here. Everyone who attended had a lovely time, especially the youngsters. A lot of the children who came now want to work at Branston when they are older!"
The winner of the Branston quiz was Magda Nowak, who won a food hamper. Marcin Karolczak correctly guessed the number of potatoes in the bag - 100 - and won a family ticket to Crealy Park, donated to Branston by Acorn recruitment agency.

Ian said that Branston is hoping to put on similar events in the future due to the success of the open day. "It's nice to open ourselves up to the local community and tell people a bit more about who we are and what we do."

The event was held last weekend - 22 and 23 June.
