Biofumigation
Natural fumigation for healthy soil
Biofumigation exploits the natural defence mechanism in some plants: mainly 'hot' mustards. When the plant cells are disrupted a natural chemical reaction releases volatile isothiocyanates (ITCs), which are similar to metham sodium in activity.
Branston offers two biofumigant mixes:
- CureGro - a very 'hot' blend of special mustard varieties, Brassica juncea (Brown mustard, var ISCI 99) and Sinapsis alba (white mustard) used to produce a good skin finish in high risk situations
- FumiGro - a blend of a special variety of Eruca sativa (rocket) and Brassica juncea (Brown mustard, var ISCI 99), which is a potent mix targeted at soils that have a free living nematode problem
These should be grown ahead of a potato crop then chopped and incorporated into moist soil for maximum effect. Both are ideal for suppression of soil-borne bacteria, fungal spores, some nematodes and weed seeds as well as improving soil structure and providing green manure.
