About potatoes
Fascinating facts
Different potatoes are grown at different times of the year:
- New potatoes – or earlies – are planted January to March and harvested May to July
- Second earlies are planted in March and April and harvested July to October
- The main crop is planted in April and May and harvested in September and October
So that they can be available all year round, many main crop potatoes are harvested and then kept fresh in cold stores. You’ll also see imported new potatoes on supermarket shelves from February to May, which bridges the natural gap between the two UK seasons.
