Potato facts

Fascinating facts

Different potatoes are grown at different times of the year:

  • Earlies are planted from February to March and harvested from late May to July
  • Second earlies are planted in March and April and harvested from July to October
  • Maincrop potatoes are planted from March to May and harvested from August to October

So that they can be available all year round, many maincrop potatoes are harvested and then kept fresh in coldstores. You’ll also see imported new potatoes on supermarket shelves from February to May, which bridges the natural gap between the two UK seasons.
