Jacket potatoes

What you’ll need:

  • 1, 2 or however many potatoes you can eat!
  • Butter, cheese or any other toppings you fancy

What to do:

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 180ºc
  2. Wash and dry your potatoes and then prick with a fork
  3. Rub a little oil and salt over them – this makes the skin extra crunchy
  4. Put the potatoes onto the shelf and bake for around 1 hour. Larger spuds may take longer. To speed up the cooking, put a metal skewer through the length of the potato.

Good varieties to use:

Marfona, Estima, Saxon, Maris Piper, Desiree

Top tip:

Once cooked, cut your spud in half, scoop out the potato, mix with grated cheese, cooked bacon, salt and pepper, and then put it back in the skins. Bake for another few minutes – delicious!

  • Jacket potatoes are good when you're on a diet - tasty and filling but can be low in calories! I like cottage cheese and pineapple, or tuna and sweetcorn. Vegetarian chilli is low fat too!
